7.Chemical reaction:


In a zinc–manganese dioxide dry battery, the zinc can is the negative terminal through which the electric current flows into the device. The zinc is oxidised according to the following half-equation.


Zn(s) → Zn2+(aq) + 2 e [E° = -0.7626 volts]

The positive terminal is a mixture of chemicals – usually a mixture of manganese dioxide powder, carbon and an electrolyte to increase the electrical conductivity. A carbon electrode rod also is placed inside the middle of the battery, connecting the two metal-capped ends of opposite charge and serving as the positive terminal.The reaction is as follows:

2MnO2(s) + 2 e + 2NH4Cl(aq) → Mn2O3(s) + 2NH3(aq) + H2O(aq) + 2 Cl [e° ≈ +.5 v]

and the Cl combines with the Zn2+.

There are other possible side-reactions, but the overall reaction in a zinc–manganese dioxide battery can be represented as:

Zn(s) + 2MnO2(s) + 2NH4Cl(aq) → Mn2O3(s) + Zn(NH3)2Cl2 (aq) + H2O(l)

9.Product procedure:





Zinc can

The zinc can is the negative terminal and anode material


Inserting the separator

The separator and the bottom paper are inserted to prevent battery short-circuit between the positive and the negative electrode.


Filling cathode material

The mixture of manganese dioxide, electrolyte and others are filled as the cathode material


Inserting carbon rod

The carbon rod for collecting electricity is inserted into the middle of the battery



The plastic gasket for sealing is fitted to prevent leakage and water evaporation


Fitting tinplate bottom and metal jacket

The tinplate bottom and washer are placed on the bottom of zinc can and covered by metal jacket


Finished product

The finished battery is packed by shrink after inspecting on its voltage, current and appearance
